What is Green Power

GreenPower is a government accreditation program that enables your energy provider to purchase renewable energy on your behalf. The program was developed in consultation with the energy industry, and various non-government organisations including the Australian Consumers Association, Greenpeace, the Australian Conservation Foundation and the World Wide Fund for Nature. The aims of the program are to facilitate the installation of new Renewable Energy generators across Australia beyond mandatory renewable requirements.

• To encourage growth in consumer demand for Renewable Energy.
• To provide consumer choice for, and increase confidence in credible Renewable Energy products
• To increase consumer awareness of Renewable Energy and greenhouse issues.
• The participating renewable energy generators generate electricity from sources like mini hydro, wind power, solar, biogas and biomass, which produce no net greenhouse gas emissions.

When you choose to buy a GreenPower product, the few cents extra you pay in addition to your electricity account each day is invested in the renewable energy sector. Between 2008 - 2011 GreenPower has raised between $80M and $88M p.a. consistently and purchased between 20 - 25% of the purchase of Large Generation Certificates (previously Renewable Energy Certificates) in Australia.

Because GreenPower meets the highest environmental standards, the 'tick' logo is used to indicate the renewable energy you are supporting is the best choice for the environment. The government GreenPower program organises publicly available independent auditing of energy retailers' sales and purchases.
