Renewable energy is the term used to describe any source of energy that can be used without depleting its reserves. Western Australia is generously endowed with renewable energy resources - sunshine and wind are plentiful and there are a number of locations throughout the State where hydro, tidal and biomass energy resources are potentially available.
Perth Energy has been a pioneer in Renewable Energy (RE) supply to the WA contestable market. We helped develop the landfill gas generation sector and currently sell nearly all of this RE in the South West Interconnected System (SWIS).
Perth Energy is working with a number of partners to develop further RE projects, particularly the smaller, more regionally based projects that would provide direct benefits to the local communities.
RE, power generated from renewable fuel sources as defined in the Renewable Energy (Electricity) Act 2000 and administered by the Office of the Renewable Energy Regulator (ORER), had had significant problems being promoted in WA. Recent electricity reform implemented by the WA Government has gone some way to address the network access issues plaguing RE projects of the past.
Federal Government’s Mandatory Renewable Energy Target MRET
The Commonwealth Government’s enhanced Renewable Energy Target (RET) places a legal liability on wholesale purchasers of electricity to proportionately contribute towards the generation of an additional 45,000 GWh of renewable energy by 2020.
As of 1 January 2011, the RET was split into two parts, the Large-scale Renewable Energy Target (LRET) and the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES).
-
Both parts of the scheme have been established to encourage additional generation of electricity from renewable energy sources by providing a mechanism by which small-scale systems and renewable energy power stations can create and sell certificates based on how much renewable electricity they generate or displace.
-
The LRET and SRES are administrated by the Office of the Renewable Energy Regulator (ORER)
