Perth Energy has engaged in the WA electricity industry reform process since its
inception. We established and chaired the Independent Power Advisory Group (IPAG),
whose work and achievement has been well documented – even in WA’s
Hansards.
We were a key industry participant in the Electricity Reform Taskforce's (ERTF)
process and were represented on the ERTF's Market Design and Electricity Code
Working Groups. Prior to that, we were a foundation member of the Electricity
Access Consultation Committee (EACC) and the Renewable Energy Access Working
Group (REAWG) chaired by the Government, laying the groundwork for a revamp
of the access rules governing sustainable energy.
With the establishment of the Electricity Reform Implementation Unit (ERIU)
by the Government following the tabling of the ERTF Report in October 2002,
Perth Energy became involved in most Expert Teams set up by ERIU to deal with
various aspects of reform implementation. We are continuing with this work today
as a member of the Office of Energy’s Industry Reference Group and the
Independent Market Operator's Market Advisory Committee. We actively help communicate
the workings of the WEM Rules to consumer groups through our membership of the
CCI-WA electricity reference group and other forums.
Perth Energy is an inaugural member of the Electricity Ombudsman’s Scheme
and we hold a full Retail License issue by the Economic Regulation Authority,
Permit #ERL10
Against the background of a past restrictive network access regime prior to
the introduction of the WEM, Perth Energy successfully brokered Independent
Power Producer (IPP) capacity to some of the State's largest electricity users.
This capacity was excess capacity from self-supply resources projects that would
have otherwise been left unused.
Perth Energy also fostered the development of independent renewable energy projects
by buying or placing their power in the fledgling contestable market. We pioneered
the supply of green power to a number of environmentally conscious customers
including a large number of local government councils.
Perth Energy optimises the benefit to our partners and customers by and managing
capacity and energy as portfolios. This approach has seen constant improvement
to our trading and retail operation by offering to our customers the most value
adding, price competitive supply.
